Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has directed the Department of Defense to significantly reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. He cited the costs of the exercises and the inappropriate signals sent to North Korea as reasons for this decision. On the 16th, President Trump announced via social media that he had instructed the Department of Defense to scale back the US-South Korea joint military exercises. He claimed that the exercises are expensive and send inappropriate signals to North Korea. The 'Eulji Freedom Shield' exercise, which involves approximately 18,000 South Korean troops, is scheduled to begin on the 17th. President Trump stated that while it is too late to cancel the exercises, their scale will be reduced. He had previously scaled back the joint exercises during negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in his first term. Additionally, President Trump mentioned that South Korea had rejected a request to participate in the Iran war, claiming that he recently asked the South Korean president if they were willing to join in the denuclearization of Iran, but was turned down. Many of America's allies, including South Korea, are not participating in the US-Israel war against Iran. This announcement comes amid ongoing negotiations for strategic investment projects between the US and South Korea.
