U.S. financial giant Goldman Sachs has signed a contract to acquire NEOS Investments, which specializes in option income ETFs, for up to $2.25 billion (approximately ¥357.87 billion).
The acquisition will allow Goldman Sachs to incorporate NEOS's existing product lineup, including a Bitcoin income ETF valued at around $1 billion (approximately ¥159 billion), significantly expanding its business scale in the crypto-asset linked ETF sector.
This transaction will be conducted in cash and stock, with the total amount reaching up to $2.25 billion depending on the achievement of specific performance and service targets. Completion is expected in the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
NEOS manages approximately $30 billion (around ¥4.77 trillion) in assets through 19 option income ETFs. After the acquisition, funds such as the Neos Bitcoin High Income ETF (BTCI), Neos Boosted Bitcoin High Income ETF (XBCI), and Neos Ethereum High Income ETF (NEHI) will fall under Goldman Sachs Asset Management.
Among these, BTCI is a flagship product with net assets reaching approximately $1 billion. These funds do not directly hold Bitcoin (Bitcoin/BTC) or Ethereum (Ethereum/ETH) but aim to generate monthly income by selling options while gaining exposure through related listed products and derivatives.
NEOS co-founders Garrett Paolella and Troy Cates are expected to join Goldman Sachs Asset Management as partners after the transaction is completed. CEO David Solomon has indicated that NEOS's investment approach complements the firm's buffer strategies, operational results, and income strategies.
With this acquisition, Goldman Sachs will gain a Bitcoin income ETF business with a certain operational scale without having to develop new ETFs from scratch.
Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas has pointed out that by incorporating the approximately $1 billion BTCI, Goldman Sachs could surpass BlackRock's "iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA)" in scale. BITA began operations in June and has net assets of approximately $59 million (around ¥9.38 billion).
Goldman Sachs itself had also applied in April for a Bitcoin Premium ETF that aims to generate income using options linked to a physical Bitcoin ETF. With the acquisition of NEOS, the firm will be able to integrate existing operational infrastructure without waiting for its own product launch.
Additionally, the total asset scale of derivative income ETFs has reached approximately $180 billion (around ¥28.6 trillion), with an average annual growth rate exceeding 70% since 2021. After integrating NEOS and its existing business, Goldman Sachs's total ETF managed assets are expected to exceed $130 billion (around ¥20.6 trillion).
