What Is APR? Understanding Annual Percentage Rate in Crypto
APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate — a figure that expresses an interest rate or yield as a percentage per year. In crypto you see it constantly: staking, lending, and DeFi liquidity provision are often shown as "this pool's APR is X%."
How APR Works
APR is a simple annual rate that does not account for compounding. An APR of 10% means roughly 10% of your principal in rewards over a year, assuming you do not reinvest the rewards.
By contrast, APY (Annual Percentage Yield) does include compounding — earning rewards on your rewards. For the same activity, the more frequently rewards are reinvested, the higher APY runs above APR.
- APR — simple annual rate; no compounding effect.
- APY — effective annual rate including compounding.
Why It Matters to Traders and Investors
APR lets you compare different products or pools on the same "per year" yardstick. But crypto APR comes with caveats:
- It varies — many DeFi and staking APRs move constantly with supply and demand; the displayed number does not guarantee the future.
- It doesn't reflect risk — a high APR can carry price volatility, smart-contract risk, and the risk that the reward token itself falls in value. High yield does not mean safe or advantageous.
- Fees and terms — your actual yield depends on fees, lock-up periods, and other conditions.
Don't judge on the APR number alone — understand the mechanism and the risks. It does not guarantee future profit.
FAQ
Q. What's the difference between APR and APY? A. APR is a simple annual rate without compounding; APY is the effective rate including compounding. All else equal, APY is higher.
Q. Is APR fixed? A. In most crypto cases it varies. A displayed APR is an estimate at that moment and does not guarantee the future.
Q. Is a higher APR always better? A. Not necessarily. High APR often means high risk, and a falling reward token can erode your real gain.
Q. Where can I check APR? A. On each exchange's or DeFi protocol's interface; confirm the terms and calculation method with the provider.
