Venezuela Demands Return of 31 Tons of Gold from the Bank of England
The Venezuelan government and opposition are pushing for the return of 31 tons of gold held by the Bank of England. The current estimated value is $4 billion, which Venezuela plans to use for earthquake recovery efforts in June. Both sides stated in a joint statement that they are working to recover international reserve assets held by the Bank of England. This gold has been inaccessible since 2018 due to the Maduro government's lack of recognition. The interim president of Venezuela has requested the return of the gold from the British monarch. The key issue is who has the authority to direct the assets in the UK on behalf of the central bank. According to the overview of the UK Supreme Court case, both Maduro's side and Guaidó's side claim central bank representation authority and have issued conflicting directives. The Bank of England is seeking a court ruling, and there may be legal liability issues regarding asset return amid the political power struggle. The UK House of Commons Library summarized Maduro's arrest and Rodríguez's interim presidency in January of this year. The UK government has stated its support for a safe transition in Venezuela. For the return to actually take place, the central bank's representation authority, recognition by the UK government, and court procedures must align, and the current timeline for the return has not been disclosed.
