Fixed Term in Dollars: A Bank Updated Its Rates, Reaching Up to 4.5%
A well-known bank has updated the conditions of its fixed-term deposits in dollars aimed at businesses, offering rates that reach up to 4.5% annually. The modification aims to improve the yield on the dollars that small and medium-sized enterprises keep deposited.
The proposal includes different yields based on the duration of the funds' immobilization. The rate starts at 1.25% annually for short-term placements and reaches 4.5% for longer periods.
The bank in question is Banco Provincia. This detail is relevant because the fixed term in dollars offers a profit in that currency. Unlike a deposit in pesos, the capital does not depend on the evolution of the exchange rate to determine the nominal amount that is recovered at maturity: a certain amount of dollars is deposited, and those funds are received along with the corresponding interest.
The modification reported by Banco Provincia establishes a scale of rates that depends on the chosen term. Companies can access a Nominal Annual Rate (TNA) ranging from 1.25% to 4.5%. The maximum rate of 4.5% does not correspond to a 30-day placement.
To achieve that yield, one must opt for a considerably longer period. The bank's historical documentation shows that dollar placements offered a 4.5% annual rate for various terms during the first months of 2026, before the rate structure was subsequently modified.
In the bank's rate tables, traditional dollar placements are also differentiated according to the period of permanence. In the latest available table, we see rates of 1.25% for 30 to 44 days, 1.50% for 45 to 59 days, 1.75% for 60 to 89 days, 2% for 90 to 119 days, and 2.75% for 120 to 179 days. For periods of 180 days and beyond, the rate recorded in that table was 3.25%, while placements of 360 days or more reached 4.25%.
Banco Provincia allows for the establishment of a traditional fixed term in both pesos and dollars. For operations aimed at individuals, the entity informs that there are different available channels: DNI Account, Internet Banking Provincia (BIP), BIP Mobile, and branches.
In the case of companies, the procedure and conditions depend on the channel enabled for each client. The operation consists of selecting the foreign currency, indicating the amount to be placed, choosing the term, and accepting the current rate for that operation.
Once established, the money remains immobilized until the established maturity date. At the end of the period, the capital and interest are credited according to the agreed conditions. The duration is the central point of the decision.
Banco Provincia publishes different scales because the yield increases as the placement time extends. Therefore, it is not necessarily advisable to automatically choose the highest rate: a company that may need those dollars in a few months might prioritize a shorter term even if the yield is lower.
The main strategy is to define how long the dollars can remain immobilized before choosing the rate. If it is funds that a company needs to meet payments or cover operational expenses in the short term, extending the term too much can create a liquidity problem even if the yield is higher. Conversely, if there are dollars that do not have a planned destination for several months, a longer placement may allow for a higher rate.
On a hypothetical investment of US$100,000 at a TNA of 4.5% for 180 days, the interest would be US$2,219, using the proportional calculation of the annual rate for that period. If maintained for a full year at that same rate, the interest would be US$4,500. The actual account depends on the rate that the bank confirms for the chosen term and the specific conditions of the operation.
