Stripe has finalized the acquisition of AI gateway startup OpenRouter for over $7 billion. OpenRouter primarily helps clients access various AI models based on their needs and budgets, and is seen as a unified access layer in the AI field. OpenRouter completed a $113 million Series B funding round in May this year, with a valuation of approximately $1.3 billion, backed by investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's CapitalG. OpenRouter's CEO, Alex Atallah, likened the company to "the Stripe of the AI space," emphasizing that the platform provides a single entry point to help clients avoid being locked into a specific model. The platform has reached 8 million global users and connects to over 400 models. Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were in talks for the acquisition, and Bloomberg has now disclosed that discussions have progressed to a formal deal, with the valuation pushed above $7 billion. A Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.
