San Cayetano Week Begins: When is the Patron Saint of Labor Celebrated and Why is it Important for Argentinians

The San Cayetano week has begun, one of the most attended religious dates in Argentina. Every year, thousands of people prepare for the celebration on August 7, a day when prayers are made for work, bread, and well-being for families.

This date honors Cayetano de Thiene, a 16th-century Italian priest recognized for his dedication to the needy.

In our country, devotion strengthened in the 1930s and has its main meeting point at the San Cayetano Sanctuary in Liniers, where the faithful participate in masses and pilgrimages.

Who was San Cayetano

Cayetano de Thiene was born on October 1, 1480 in Vicenza, Italy, into a noble family. From a young age, he received an education linked to study and obtained a doctorate in Civil and Canon Law at the University of Padua.

At the age of 26, he moved to Rome, where he served as private secretary to Pope Julius II. However, over the years he decided to leave that position and dedicate his life to helping the most needy.

He was ordained a priest in 1516 and began a mission focused on the renewal of the Church, assisting the poor, and accompanying the sick. During that period, he founded the Oratory of Divine Love and the Order of Clerics Regular Theatines, congregations aimed at recovering the austerity and spiritual commitment of Church leaders.

He also created the Montes de Piedad, an institution designed to financially assist citizens without resources. It became an alternative to the abusive loans of the time.

His religious activity was linked to the context of the Protestant Reformation initiated by Martin Luther in the 16th century. "The first thing to do to reform the Church is to reform oneself," he stated.

Cayetano de Thiene died on August 7, 1547 in Naples, Italy, at the age of 66. Despite the advance of an illness, he refused to rest on a mattress.

According to Catholic tradition, after his death, various miracles began to be attributed to his intercession. He was beatified in 1629 by Pope Urban VIII and canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X.

Why is San Cayetano Day on August 7

San Cayetano Day is celebrated every August 7 because that date coincides with the anniversary of his death in 1547.

Although Cayetano was not originally recognized worldwide as the patron of labor, that association strengthened in Argentina during the 20th century.

In the 1930s, the international crisis caused by the Wall Street crash in 1929 led to a significant increase in unemployment and economic difficulties for many families.

The priest Domingo Falgioni, linked to the Catholic Workers' Circles, promoted the dissemination of the image of the saint accompanied by the Child Jesus and a sheaf of wheat. This representation reinforced the idea of asking for "bread and work".

Since then, devotion and thousands of people began to approach temples every August 7 to thank for favors received or ask for help in difficult situations.

The main place of celebration in the country is the San Cayetano Sanctuary located at Cuzco 150, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Liniers. The church was founded in 1875 by the Society of Daughters of the Divine Savior.

Prayers and Offerings to Ask for Help

The faithful who participate in the San Cayetano celebration usually come with various symbols related to their requests and thanks. Among the offerings are sheaves of wheat, candles, images of the saint, and holy cards.
