Indian Police Target Meta India Head in AI Manipulation Case Aimed at Modi

Indian police have made Arun Srinivas, the head of Meta India, a subject of criminal investigation in connection with the distribution of AI-generated content and manipulated posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This investigation was initiated following the spread of AI-generated images and manipulated videos aimed at Modi during student protests via social media. It is reported that businessman S. Aravind Reddy and Telangana BJP activist T. Saikiran Gowd filed a complaint with the police. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the posts were created using digital editing or AI technology. So far, investigators have not presented evidence that Arun Srinivas was directly involved in the creation or distribution of the problematic posts. However, the police explained that he was included in the investigation due to his legal responsibilities in operating and managing the platform as Meta's India representative. Meta has not issued an official statement regarding this incident. The Indian government is pushing to include influencers and podcasters who deal with news and current affairs content under content regulation this year, and the deadline for platforms to respond to post removal orders has been shortened from the previous 36 hours to 3 hours.
