Hyperscale Data Shuts Down Bitcoin Mining for AI Deal Worth Over 1.2 Billion
Hyperscale Data has ceased Bitcoin mining operations at its Michigan data center to accommodate an AI customer, with a contract potentially generating over 1.2 billion dollars over 20 years. The deal, announced on Wednesday, includes a 10-year term with options for two five-year extensions and covers 20 megawatts of capacity for a California-based cloud computing provider. CEO William Horne stated that the shutdown allows the team to focus on preparing the facility for the new customer. The agreement also includes an option for the customer to add 32 megawatts within the first two years, which could increase total contract revenue to over 3 billion dollars if all options are exercised. Hyperscale plans to sell its mining servers and anticipates gains from those sales. The company has not disclosed a start date for AI operations. Other miners are also transitioning to serve AI customers, with industry experts noting the potential profitability of repurposing infrastructure amid growing AI demand. However, the transition costs can be significant, as seen in IREN's recent quarterly results, where AI cloud revenue exceeded Bitcoin mining revenue for the first time, despite a 450.4 million dollar write-down in asset values related to retired mining equipment.
