Hedge Funds Reduced U.S. Stocks Last Week, Marking the Largest Weekly Net Sell-off Since 2025

Last week, hedge funds recorded the largest weekly net sell-off of U.S. stocks since April 2025, ending three consecutive weeks of net buying. Individual stocks accounted for approximately 53% of the total sell-off, with 9 out of 11 sectors experiencing net selling, primarily concentrated in information technology, industrials, utilities, healthcare, and materials. Macro products such as index futures and ETFs made up about 47% of the total sell-off. Hedge funds slightly increased their short positions in U.S.-listed ETFs, ending six consecutive weeks of short covering, indicating that hedge funds are significantly reducing their long exposure to U.S. stocks.
