EU lawmakers have backed a set of temporary "Chat Control" rules that allow large internet platforms to continue scanning user communications for child abuse material, in order to maintain existing content moderation and reporting mechanisms. Encrypted messaging applications are not included in this round of regulations, and related measures must be approved by the governments of member states before they can be officially implemented.
