Ethereum EIP-8141 proposal faces gas limit issues for privacy transactions
A proposal submitted on Sept. 5 aims to allow certain Ethereum nodes to accept privacy transactions exceeding a shared validation gas limit of 100000. This limit is below the reported proof-verification cost of 190628 gas for an optimized Groth16 proof verifier, which includes a cryptographic pairing check costing 181000 gas. The proposal, which modifies EIP-8141, would set a common floor for transaction validation, enabling capable nodes to accept heavier transactions locally. However, this does not guarantee wider network support. The benchmark indicates minimum gas requirements of 211828 for a single-note spend and 351828 for an eight-note spend, which exceed the proposed allowance. The current draft of EIP-8250 introduces a separate budget for nonce keys, complicating the cost structure. Benchmark author mmjahanara suggests a minimum of 250000 gas for optimized transactions, a recommendation not yet adopted. The proposal's flexibility may help address privacy-proof validation challenges, but accommodating proof costs across the network remains essential for public access.
