The Aztec Foundation has reduced its workforce from 33 to 15 through organizational restructuring. This represents a reduction of approximately 55% of the total staff, cutting 18 positions, and will focus on network operations, security, and scalability management. Jack Williamson, co-founder of Aztec, announced the restructuring on July 29. This move is not a response to a crisis but a structural transition aligned with the maintenance and management phase of the live network. Aztec is a Layer 2 network that implements privacy transactions and private smart contracts on Ethereum, launched on February 13, 2025. The workforce reduction occurred after the recent activation of Alpha V5, which has more than doubled the proof time for private transactions and reduced transaction costs by about 50%. The proof time for private token transfers on personal laptops has been shortened from 5.2 seconds in V4 to 2.5 seconds in V5, and the proof time in browser environments has decreased from 12.5 seconds to 6.8 seconds. The Aztec Foundation will continue its network security, governance, and ecosystem support tasks with a team of 15. Security issues remain a challenge during the operational transition, and users of Alpha V4 have been advised to withdraw their funds.
