Companies have begun to set limits on their employees' use of artificial intelligence (AI) and allocate different models based on job functions. The increase in token usage by chatbots and coding agents has made cost control a management priority. On the 12th, Fortune reported that Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) are changing their training systems to limit AI usage for some employees and to utilize smaller, cheaper models. This movement reflects companies' AI operational policies as of August 12, 2026. Companies like Samsara, Cigna, Yum Brands, and Compass are moving away from high-cost models and are categorizing models according to the nature of work. Gartner forecasts that global AI spending will reach $252 billion in 2026, a 44% increase from the previous year. Investments in AI infrastructure are expected to rise by $401 billion. As AI adoption increases, the costs associated with model usage, servers, storage, and electricity also rise. Cost pressures are particularly pronounced in coding agents that utilize long contexts and repetitive calls. DocuSign has reported that over 1,000 engineers are using AI coding tools, with approximately 75% of new code being written with AI assistance. Tesla introduced a spending limit of $200 per week per employee for AI starting in July. Companies are changing their operational systems to assign smaller models for simple tasks and high-performance models for complex analysis and coding.
