Cash Deficit in Russian Banks Reaches 2.85 Trillion Rubles
As of September 2026, the deficit of free cash in Russian banks has reached 2.85 trillion rubles, marking a record high since March 2022. The situation has worsened due to active cash withdrawals by citizens and businesses, as well as mandatory reserves that banks were required to transfer to the Central Bank by September 8. To address the deficit, the regulator has issued additional loans to banks, including 460 billion rubles at an annual interest rate of 15%. In early September, over 150 billion rubles were withdrawn from accounts, and since the beginning of the year, more than 2.75 trillion rubles in cash have been outside the banks. The main reasons for this include rising taxes, low interest rates on deposits, concerns for savings, and the outflow of money abroad, which amounted to about 20 billion dollars in the first half of the year. Additionally, banks are facing a shortage of yuan, linked to the increased cost of borrowing the Chinese currency due to long holidays in China. It was previously reported that Russians cashed out a record 25 billion dollars amid anxiety over the war.
