UK retail sales increased by 1.6% in July compared to the same month last year, but fell short of market expectations of 2.2%. Month-on-month, sales decreased by 0.5%, marking a decline in consumer spending after a month of growth. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), retail sales in June rose by 0.7% from the previous month, but in July, sales from non-food stores and non-store retailers fell, leading to a downturn. Over the three months leading up to July, retail sales were up 1.1% compared to the previous three months, and 3.0% higher than the same period last year. Sales from non-store retailers increased due to promotional activities and seasonal product sales, while supermarket sales were positively impacted by the heatwave and strong alcohol and beverage sales. However, for the month of July, it was analyzed that the promotional effects were brought forward, shifting some demand to June. Clothing store sales decreased in July following an increase in June, with store visits declining due to the heat. Online sales increased over the three-month period, but fell by 3.9% in July alone. The share of online sales in total sales dropped from 29.2% in June to 28.3% in July. This data indicates that while UK consumer spending has slowed on a monthly basis, summer promotions and weather effects have supported the three-month trend.
